Tue, 22 April 2008 On Wednesday, the last day of seminars at NAB I attended a series of classes on Flash Video as well as an introduction to the Adobe Media Player. You should google the AMP because I believe it has significant implications to independent content producers. Thursday was the last day of the exhibition and I chose to look at prosumer cameras from JVC, Canon, Panasonic and Sony in order to see what the state of the art is for filmmakers such as myself and what the future might hold. There's also been an interesting back and forth between myself and Mike Jones in the comments section of episode # 84 about new codecs and cameras and the larger picture of how to evaluate and choose the right camera for you needs. You'll see a counterpoint on this subject between Mike and a reader on his blog. I have to confess that after an entire day looking and handling cameras from the above mentioned 4 manufacturers the most important thing I leaned is that I barely have a clue as to what the determining factors of an effective video camera. The debate rages on without a clear winner and I'm just beginning to realize I what it is I need to know. Comments[3] |
Hey Paul, last year was my first opportunity to attend NAB, unlike you I didn't get a chance to attend this year's conference. I can relate to your mention of trying to drink it all in. I attended the Post Production World Conference last year and by the time the show floor opened, there was hardly the energy to effectively enjoy the gear on display. Thanks for the opportunity to attend this year's NAB vicariously through your audio journal. Keep up the good work!!

Thanks Bill. It feels kind of good to take a break from the show. I usually wear myself out quickly, end up dragging myself across the show by the end of the week because I feel compelled to see everything. I read on a few blogs that the show was slower this year, I wonder if that means fewer people or just not as frenzied because there were few big announcements and a lot heavy hitters like Avid and Apple weren't there?
Hi Paul, Thanks for your response to my post. I'm not sure why I thought you were making reference to attending the '09 NAB and now that I think about it, it did seem strange that you were talking about some of the classes I may have attended, and I thought "it's weird that the same classes would be offered this year", perhaps that was the case for those, like me, who couldn't get to every class I wanted to. Now that I realize you were speaking from your '08 NAB experiences, it all makes sense. :) Is it fair to think that this year's NAB was slower because we weren't in attendance? I'm interested in watching your film. I do work in Community Television in Canada, which is somewhat close in nature to Public Television in the US, but I don't think you would be interested in airing your film on a Canadian station. Although I could slot you in after Thursday night TV Bingo!! :) Cheers
